Two ideas I need to develop further

This hut is built into the side of a very steep portion of the mountain. The fact that it is mostly underground gives a sense of protection when you enter it.

This is the plan of the above hut. The main area of the hut is located at a higher elevation than the entrance so that the heat stays inside when people enter an exit. The only thing at entry level is storage for gear and firewood. There is space for sitting and for sleeping. The windows are placed high on the wall so that people can sit near them without feeling cold, but still allowing for ample natural light.

This hut is meant to blend in with the surface of the mountain. The shape of the hut mimics the shape of the hills around it, and the only part exposed is the front wall where the entrance and windows are located. From above, the hut is essentially not there. This hut provides the same protective feeling as the other hut, but has the additional benefit of feeling more natural. When people are hiking or skiing, and they seek shelter, their natural instinct is to look for a cave or some kind of cover. This hut emulates the feel of a cave that has been enclosed to form a shelter.

Sketch of the hut demonstrating how it blends with the hill.

  1. I like both or them. The one that has two levels actually seems more logical for heating and spatial purposes. There could be a way to blend these two ideas into one... Watch the first Lord of the Rings for inspiration... Seriously... Maybe the structure is in the mountain where you enter.. go up the stairs and are in your hut. Just an idea.
